Laura Browne

Laura has travelled up mountains, into forests, gorges, and caves of the Yukon, Ontario and Crete. Her journeys to reach sources of inspiration involve planning trips around the timing of the full moon, being prepared to sleep on mountain tops for a few nights, often spending days full of sketching and painting. She uses a variety of media to express her sense of energy and onement with nature.

Thirty years ago Laura felt jade fever in the Yukon wilderness. Fortunate to join forces with jade miners and northern characters, she has learned to mine and work jade, attempting to expose its inner light and hidden beauty. Laura incorporates thin slices of hand-polished jade into some of her stained glass windows, jade jewellery and a future jade light table. Her large stained glass "Lake Huron Wave" is now hanging in the Goderich Council Chambers after it won first prize in the 2013 juried municipal art show.

Laura says: “For those who wish, but cannot climb to the top of mountain peaks, or swim into caves at night, may they vicariously travel my artistic paths, traverse challenging edges of perception, explore new heights and valleys, share a sense of wonder and awareness of distant horizons. Can you go there? Can you sense it?"

Laura pursues her careers as artist and teacher, hoping to open eyes and minds. She has taught Art, Special Education, English and Native Studies in Greece, the Yukon and Huron County.

Feel the Winds

Wild gusts over Lake Huron,
the last sail of the season,
pushing the elements, myself and the small 13’ sunfish.

A little human playing as a conduit,
trying to hold powerful winds
with the sheet-line in one hand,
the other hand on the tiller reading the waves.

Exhilaration in the moment of the Elusive Balance,
Riding wind-tossed waves,
Guiding the small craft to be One with Nature,
Maximize the elemental powers, flying-speed, balance.

Ride the Wave:
let it carry you peacefully to distant horizons.

This stained glass design came to me that day,
soaring with the powers that Be.
“Today my sail I lift”.*

When my uncle was in his last earthly abode,
I felt this image would give him a little peace,
a little light from beyond, a smile.
Let the Light Shine In.
